Have you ever wondered how large corporations are able to increase their profits, pay large dividends and bonuses year after year – no matter how the economy is performing!!
Well, I’ll let you into a secret. Large companies have commercial finance teams, headed by an FD/CFO. These teams work in partnership with the business MD to help them define, implement, monitor progress and achieve the delivery of their strategic goals.
We do the obvious things that you would expect e.g. Business Planning, Budgeting and Re-forecasting, objectives and KPIs, monthly forward-looking financial reporting, cahsflows etc. However, we also do a lot of work on preparing business cases, assessing potential opportunities or investments that may materialise.
Portfolio CFOs often take the lead on ‘professionalising’ the operation – creating board packs, managing strategic risks, ensuring all corporate governance and regulatory requirements are met and managing relationships with external stakeholders.
